What We Grow?

South Florida is one of the most exciting regions to farm in the U.S. We have year round sunshine, being located in Zone 10. This comes with a myriad of soil, water access, and pest management issues (as we are regional to the Caribbean, South America, and Africa). However, the benefit is year-round farming and a diversity of crops that can only grow here.

Fall

In Florida, fall is an excellent time to start a vegetable garden. Cool-season vegetables to plant in October include broccollettucecarrotsBrussels sprouts, and radishes.

If you’re planting in an area already used for spring and summer crops, be careful to remove all dead or diseased plant matter, including roots.

You may want to have your soil re-tested to check the pH level and to determine what nutrients you might need to add. Hoe your soil a few weeks before planting, and then add organic matter, such as cow manure or compost.

Spring

In Florida, Spring is a time of rebirth and awakening in the vegetable garden. season vegetables to plant in October include broccollettucecarrotsBrussels sprouts, and radishes.

Summer

When the heat of early May rolls around, its time to rotate to summer crops that can endure our sun, heat, and humidity.

While herbs are the norm summer cultivators, Summer is the Season for Fruits. We also recommend more Caribbean and Asian crop varieties.

The adventurous gardener can implement more permaculture techniques to alleviate our climate restrictions.

If you prefer to give your garden a rest during the summer, take advantage of the summer sun to solarize the soil. This kills nematodes, weeds, and other harmful pests with heat.
